The frequency of elimination is directly related to the timing of food and water intake.  For instance, there is a normal reflex in place so that when new food is added to the stomach it  triggers a signal to empty the colon.  The pattern of elimination is also influenced by activity level and the success of your training routine.  In young puppies less than 12-24 weeks the ability to postpone elimination is developing but is not very good.  Generally you could expect elimination each 1-2 hours when your puppy is awake
